Children’s Grief Program

Children's Grief Program

When a child loses a loved one, the grieving process can be especially difficult. Children do not grieve in the same way as do adults, and as part of our commitment to bereavement care Cornerstone Hospice offers support and healing for children age three years and up.

For young children, Cornerstone is one of the few hospice agencies in Florida to offer Sand Tray and Play Therapy to provide a forum for addressing the numerous traumatic incidents that can have long-lasting impact on children. Older children and adolescents benefit from specialized counseling techniques that address their particular developmental level.

Camp Bridges is an overnight camping experience open to any child under the age of 13 who has participated in our bereavement counseling program. Led by a staff bereavement counselor and specially-trained volunteers, Camp Bridges provides an opportunity for children to connect with others who have also lost loved ones. In this healing environment, children engage in meaningful activities related to their loss, while also having lots of fun.

Teenagers who have experienced a loss and have participated in our bereavement counseling program may participate in a three-day/two-night Camp Adventure event. Removed from daily peer pressure, teens begin to lower their guard and bond with the group. Our children’s bereavement counselor then weaves grief and loss themes into basic survival activities.

Both Camp Bridges and Camp Adventure are available in Lake and Sumter counties. For further information, please email bereavement@cshospice.org or call our Bereavement Department at 888-728-6234.
