7TH ANNUAL “SPICE IT UP FOR CORNERSTONE HOSPICE” CHILI COOK-OFF
January 12, 2017
Fundraiser to be held at new venue.
Tavares, Fla. – The Sons of Sumter Jeep Club is on a mission to defend its title at the upcoming 7th Annual Spice it Up for Cornerstone Hospice Chili Cook-off, benefiting Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, on Saturday, March 4, at 11 a.m.
This year’s event is moving to the Wildwood Community Center, 6500 Powell Road, in order to accommodate more teams.
The 2016 winning recipe actually tied with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office’s entry and the People’s Choice Winner was declared by a coin toss. Sons of Sumter Jeep Club president Chris Berry says his team is perfecting the recipe in hopes of an outright win in this year’s competition.
“It goes down warm and has a bit of spice on your tongue at the end. It’s not too spicy, though. You won’t need a cup of milk,” promised Berry.
Proceeds from the Spice it Up for Cornerstone Hospice Chili Cook-off benefit the Lane Purcell Hospice House in Sumterville, which is why Berry encouraged his club to participate.
“Lane Purcell was a family friend and we wanted to support the community in a way that honors someone who was so important in Sumter County,” said Berry.
Purcell, a Bushnell resident and owner of the Purcell Funeral Home was killed in an accident in 2004. The Lane Purcell Hospice House opened in 2009 bearing his name and honoring his dedication to Sumter County.
Cornerstone Hospice seeks cooks with smokin’ good recipes to compete in the event. Team entry costs just $20. Each team will be able to vie for best recipe as well as best-decorated booth.
Sponsorships are also available for the fundraiser which draws hundreds of people to this family-friendly event that includes live music, chance drawing prizes, refreshments and, of course, a wide variety of chili.
